General Winston's Daughter did not live up to my expectations, and doesn't have the depth and detailed characterization of Shinn's other novels.
I loved her Samaria and Thirteen Houses series and thought this would be along similar lines, but it wasn't. The main character Averie Winston, is extremely naive and at times just down right stupid/5(32). Long before the John Travolta film of The General's Daughter (which the author extols in the foreword), Nelson DeMille's seventh mystery was the breakout hit of his career.
The rapid-fire dialogue and scenes are cinematic, and the storytelling puts most movies to shame. The book has three heroes: Paul Brenner and Cynthia Sunhill of the army's Criminal Investigation Division /5(). General Winston's Daughter really surprised me. All the way through, it feels like just another spunky-heroine-comes-of-age book -- the kind of book I really enjoy, but not a standout in that class -- and then, right near the end, the plot twists in a way that actually changed how I think Sharon Shinn amazes me/5.
General Winston's Daughter is a fantasy story set in a world similar to that of the 19th Century British Empire.
Averie is a sheltered, wealthy daughter of a general of the Aeberelle (England) army who goes to live with her father in war-torn Chiarrin (North Africa perhaps?).
The book shows the affects of war on the people and Averie/5(6). Sharon Shinn’s Archangel is an all-time favorite of mine. I love her world-building, her characters and their romance. So I was curious about reading a Young Adult novel of hers.

The General's daughter was found murdered early in the morning and it's up to Paul Brenner I read this book because of the movie and wanted to compare the two. The movie centered a lot on Paul Brenner and it actually showed Brenner and the General's daughter actually meeting when that didn't happen in the book/5.
For 17 years, Averie has lived the sheltered life of a rich general's daughter in her native land of Aeberelle, never questioning the source of her wealth or the ramifications of her father's invasions.
However, when Averie leaves Aeberelle to join her father and fiancée in Chiarrin, a foreign land under the occupation of her father's military, Averie cannot continue ignoring Author: Sharon Shinn. General Winston’s Daughter, your latest YA fantasy novel, may not be my most cherished among your works but it’s still an unusually good book, a tale of a young woman’s coming-of-age, a powerful depiction of a society that chafes under colonialism, and the story of a romantic triangle that is quite unlike most of what I usually come.

Editorial Reviews. 09/15/ Furnishing much more than the World War II experiences of three consequential American military commanders, notable writer Groom (Shiloh, ; Forrest Gump) has written an accessible, honest, largely laudatory contextualized narrative of the intertwined careers of George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and George : National Geographic Society.
